Be Safe! DIY Braces are a terrible idea
(Posted on 02/03/20)
You may have seen adverts on TV & on social media advertising cheap DIY braces without the need to see an orthodontist.
These companies offer a service where you go to one of their "smile shops" to have your teeth digitally scanned by an assistant, or even take your own impressions (moulds) of your teeth at home.
Braces from these companies are then sent to your home so you can "Do it Yourself" and superficially look a lot like Invisalign removable aligners.
However, you usually do not get a full assessment by an orthodontist or dentist and therefore little opportunity to find out about your particular orthodontic problem, the benefits and risks involved, or alternative types of braces available.
To raise awareness of these dangers, the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) and Oral Health Foundation have launched the Safe Brace campaign and website to educate and inform people on safe orthodontic treatment.
Professor Jonathan Sandler, President of the BOS said;
"In my professional opinion, if you embark on orthodontic treatment without a suitably trained clinician taking the time to examine you and make appropriate recommendations, you could be in danger of having serious conditions missed, as well as dangerous and inappropriate treatment carried out.
What other transforming dental or medical procedure would you undergo without an in-person evaluation and supervision by a medical professional?
Never cut corners or gamble with your oral health."
If you are interested in having treatment carried out by fully trained, registered professionals in a specialist orthodontic practice, then contact us and we'll be happy to help.
